LET THEM EAT CAKE!

I love to bake. Love, love, love to bake. Most recently I discovered that I am pretty good at decorating cakes and that it is a ton of fun. I have been appointed the official cake decorator for all of our office birthdays.

Last weekend we made a baby shower cake for one of my girlfriends from church. Then we made a hippo cake for my boss who collects hippos and had never had a hippo cake in her life. I say we because my dear husband has helped me out with all of these cakes lately.

It all started when I was making this cake for one of my girlfriends daughters birthday. He walked into the kitchen and asked if he could help.

Me: "Ummmmm, well, I guess so. But what do you know about decorating cakes?"
DH: "I have tricks up my sleeves! Just let me help. It will be fun."

And it was a blast! We have had so much fun designing and decorating cakes lately. In fact, he designed and carried out the hippo by himself! All I did was bake the cake. He did the whole thing while I was gone at a meeting at church Sunday afternoon. I was blown away.

Oh, and those "tricks" he had up his sleeve? When he was in 5th grade he had a crush on the little girl up the street. The Parks & Rec department in St. Louis offered free arts and crafts classes to kids during the summer. The little girls mom was teaching a cake decorating class and he thought it might be a good way to impress that little girl. I don't know if she was ever impressed or not, but he sure learned a lot about cake that he still remembers to this day.

Besides, this girl is REALLY impressed! And that's all that really matters.

PS...NOT my cake at the top. I love creative cakes and hope to be able to do one some day. That one is particulary cool and, yes, totally real!!! And a wedding cake at that. How fun!

THE PART TIME GIG

So, thank the Lord that the gig does not involve wearing that costume! It does involve working at Dairy Queen. Which would not be nearly as funny if I had not worked at DQ for 3 years in high school.

Now, hard as it is to believe, I did not have a burning desire to work at Dairy Queen again. I am working there out of necessity. We need some extra cash. DQ is 2 miles from the house, has a flexible schedule and closes at 9pm. Plus my best girlfriend works there part time while she goes to school and got me the job.

Last night was my first shift. I was horrified to realize that I still remember how to make everything. EVERYTHING! Even the Blizzard flavors that are 'new' since I worked there...guessed how to make them. And based on what I know about DQ, guessed right. That is just wrong.

I am trying to just remember that it is a job and a means to an end. And to be humble enough to avoid getting wound up on the fact that I am 31 and working with a bunch of high school students who are MY SUPERVISORS and that I am making minimum wage with a college degree.

Thankfully the girls I worked with last night are really nice and don't seem to think that it is crazy for an old lady like me to be working with a bunch of teenagers. I have to work again tomorrow night. Different crew. I hope they are nice too!

TUNE IN NEXT TIME...

(When I have a free moment) And I will tell the tales of :

My afternoon of playing hooky from work and going to the zoo with a girlfriend.

Weekend DRAMA involving another girlfriend/DRAMA involving my contractor.

My new part time job (that goes with the full time one I already had).

Cake! Lots and lots of cake.

GULP

Whew. Had to come up for air.

This week feels like 2 packed into the space of one. Which makes no sense at all. Seeing as how we had a long weekend and all.

I have something I want to post, but it is long and ongoing. I will try to get it posted on Saturday night. After I finish cutting out Flannel Graph bodies for Sunday School.

Don't you wish you had my exciting Saturday night going on? Come on. You know you want to play with the Flannel Graph! =)
